His Childhood and Education
Abdul Kalam was born to a devout Muslim family on October 15, 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, India. He is an Indian scientist known for his work on developing missiles during his tenure as chief of DRDO and later as chief scientific advisor to defence minister of India. His early childhood was spent in Ramanathapuram where he attended a school run by his father who was also a Muslim scholar belonging to Kerala school of philosophy tradition.
His Journey from ISRO to DRDO
He was part of a team which successfully developed India’s first satellite, Aryabhata, launched by Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on April 19, 1975. He received an honorary doctorate from Moscow State University in 1990, just before he took over as India’s 11th President in 2002. During his term as President, Dr. Kalam worked to transform India into a self-reliant defence powerhouse with diverse scientific capabilities and world-class educational institutions; one of his favourite projects was also working on how to harness solar energy for rural India.

Dr. Kalam is most famously known as India’s Missile Man because of his work on India’s space and missile program, which resulted in developing a satellite launch vehicle, SLV-III, which could put satellites into orbit; Agni, a nuclear missile that can reach targets 3,500 kilometers away; and, most importantly, a ballistic missile shield called an anti-ballistic missile (ABM), to defend against incoming nuclear attacks from Pakistan. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was a leading scientist of India who had dedicated his life to space research and nuclear power applications. Born in Rameswaram on October 15, 1931, he completed his diploma in aeronautical engineering from Madras Institute of Technology (MIT). He went on to complete his MSc in aerospace engineering from IIT Bombay before working for DRDO and ISRO in 1962-69.
